My Employer has just issues a letter stating that bar staff are to hand in all gifts to be raffled off to all staff (or others!) and any monies made from the raffle is to be put in the tip box.

I would like to say that the tips the money would be put into get shared out YEARLY between all staff inc chef’s. This is a small pub with 6 staff and I recieved £35 after 8 months work last year! and I know so far this year I have put over £200 in on my own already.

My question is this, I know that big corperate business have policies on receiving gifts as this could be seen as a bribe, but as bar staff what rights do we have with regards to this, we have had no change in company policy, nothing to sign, just a letter. As staff members we are all quite happy for each other to recieve gifts, it is just the employers that are making a fuss.

It comes after a member of staff was recently given two tickets to Goodwood festival of speed (these were complimentary so cost the customer nothing) they were for the following day. When our Employer found out, he got quiet annoyed by it and then we got he letter.

I have descussed this with my employer but with no joy.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

If he is telling you to put your tips into a collection pile then I would be looking for a different job. If it is a gift that people are giving which isn't monetary then maybe this should be the case. My boss (I worked in a bar) would get tickets to games, free booze, nice shirts/sweaters, jackets from beer companies or different business that came in with their product. Staff would become angry because we would never receive any of these luxuries, the boss just got them because the client was kissing up to him to sell their product in our bar. I would have to just go along with that one, but if your tips are involved then I would be out of there.
