This year turned out to be a bit different. Two days before our anniversary and after 3 ½ years of working at her absolute dream job in planned giving for Stanford University (working out of her office in our home for a great boss and a good friend—and making very good money to boot), Carolyn, for the first time in her life, lost her job.
Yes, the economic downturn of George Bush and his criminal corporate cronies and their Congressional, deregulating, free-marketeering lackeys has finally hit us personally—the perfect April Fools Day Anniversary gift. As a result, my anniversary message was merged into a little pep talk for my stunned and broken-hearted wife. She’ll do fine; we’ll do fine; but it does give one perspective, and I tried to capture that in this song. Her being let go came as an absolute shock since she is a truly wonderful person, and her work and her work ethic are beyond exemplary; hence, the title of the song, “The Surprise.”
As usual, it is a one-day affair: started in the car and written throughout the day, then recorded late in the evening in time for our anniversary the next day (This short timeline explains the clinkers and the slightly meandering melody—i.e., I haven’t really learned the song yet). Still, for a first draft, its not bad. Give it a listen. I hope you like it.
